A report illustrates the possible threat posed by artificial intelligence and suggests that human race may be at risk of becoming extinct.

Another technology that has found its way into our lives in the recent past is Artificial intelligence (AI) it is widely used to provide convenience and innovation. However, a recent report implies that there is another side of this unique technological advancement, and that is the threat that AI brings. With advanced AI development potentially able to cause human extinction according to the study, the call for intervention arises.

There is no doubt that artificial intelligence has already influenced our lives to a considerable degree. AI systems are used in a range of areas from automating jobs through to surveillance as systems advance. This report urges America to act and put restrictions in the ways that AI technologies are being developed and being used to avoid disastrous outcomes.

AI could potentially aggravate social injustice and inequity.

Note: It underlines the imperative of regulating in order to maximize positive effects of AI on individuals while minimizing adverse impacts.

Thus, it is imperative to stress that there are certain concerns that cannot be overestimated when it comes to artificial intelligence. It is not merely a technical question: it is a question of the future of mankind. undefined

It suggested that AI could further develop beyond human control and create certain devastating effects.

Jobs are at stake and millions of people are expected to be out of jobs.

AI can pose an ethical threat to society in the way it influences morality.

It is clear that weaponized AI is a major threat to global security.

There is potential social injustice due to AI not being regulated effectively.

Note: This report is a clarion call for dispassionate action that must be taken today to guarantee that AI is for the benefit of humanity and not otherwise.

Note: As AI continues to evolve, it's crucial to balance its incredible benefits with careful consideration of its potential risks to ensure a positive impact on our lives.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be simply defined as the creation of machines or systems that can perform tasks requiring human intelligence. This includes recognizing speech, making decisions, and even visual perception.

From virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa to recommendation algorithms on Amazon, AI has seamlessly integrated into our everyday lives, making things more convenient and personalized.

The positive impacts of AI are widespread and profound. In healthcare, AI-driven diagnostic tools can analyze medical data with remarkable accuracy, leading to earlier detection of diseases and more effective treatment plans.

For instance, AI algorithms can scan radiology images faster than human doctors, identifying issues that might be missed.

In finance, AI helps in detecting fraudulent transactions and provides personalized banking experiences.

Everyday conveniences, like navigation apps using real-time data to suggest the quickest routes, showcase AI's role in enhancing our daily lives.

However, these advancements come with their own set of risks and negative impacts. Job displacement due to automation is a significant concern, as AI systems can perform tasks traditionally done by humans, potentially leading to unemployment in certain sectors.

Privacy issues arise with the massive data collection required for AI systems to function effectively, raising ethical questions about how this data is used and protected. Moreover, there's the danger of AI systems being weaponized or used maliciously, posing severe security threats.

The report delves deeply into these potential dangers, highlighting the urgency for regulation and oversight. It warns of scenarios where AI could act beyond human control, leading to unintended and potentially catastrophic consequences.

This calls for immediate attention and intervention to ensure AI development is steered towards
benefiting humanity while mitigating its inherent risks.

Safety Concerns

Harris, the executive director of artificial intelligence at Gladstone, revealed some startling conclusions his team reached thanks to their "unprecedented level of access" to key figures in both the public and private sectors. Gladstone AI engaged with technical and leadership teams from major players like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta (Facebook's parent company), and Anthropic.

"We’ve uncovered some troubling realities along the way," Harris shared in a video on Gladstone AI’s website. "Behind closed doors, the safety measures for advanced AI seem shockingly inadequate given the national security threats they pose." He warned, "AI is advancing rapidly."

The Gladstone AI report highlights that competitive pressures are driving companies to fast-track AI development, often sacrificing safety and security. This rush increases the likelihood of advanced AI systems being stolen or weaponized against the United States.

These findings add to the growing chorus of warnings about AI's existential risks, even from some of the industry's most influential figures.

Nearly a year ago, Geoffrey Hinton, dubbed the "Godfather of Artificial Intelligence," resigned from Google and sounded the alarm about the technology he helped create. Hinton estimated a 10% chance that AI could lead to human extinction within the next three decades.

Last June, Hinton, along with dozens of AI industry leaders, academics, and other experts, signed a statement emphasizing that "mitigating the risk of extinction from AI must be a global priority."

Business leaders are increasingly anxious about these risks, even as they invest billions in AI. At Yale University's CEO Summit last year, 42% of CEOs surveyed believed that AI could potentially destroy humanity within the next five to ten years.

Abilities Similar to Human Learning

The Gladstone AI report highlights warnings from notable figures about the existential risks posed by AI, including Elon Musk, FTC Chairwoman Lena Khan, and a former top executive at OpenAI. It also reveals that some employees within AI companies share these concerns privately.

The report quotes an individual from a well-known AI lab who believes that releasing a next-generation AI model without access restrictions could be disastrous.

This person warned that the model's persuasive power could potentially "break democracy" if used for election interference or voter manipulation.

The report identifies AGI as a major driver of catastrophic risks due to potential loss of control. OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic, and Nvidia have publicly stated that AGI could be achieved by 2028, though some experts believe it could take much longer.

The differing opinions on AGI timelines complicate efforts to create effective policies and safeguards, risking a regulatory lag as the technology advances.

Gladstone AI also surveyed AI experts in various labs, asking for their private estimates on the likelihood of an AI accident causing "irreversible global impacts" in 2024. Estimates ranged from 4% to 20%, though the report notes these were informal and likely biased.

One of the most surprising findings is the rapid development of artificial intelligence, especially artificial general intelligence (AGI). AGI refers to AI with human-like or even superhuman learning abilities.
